Assalamu alaikum warah matullahi wa barakatuhu! May the peace and blessings of The Almighty be upon us all. (This Might Be My Last Eid In Kuwait – An OFW Story).

I would like to greet everyone a blessed and joyful EID! To all the Muslims, may our du’as and prayers have been accepted and our good deeds have been received.

As a Muslim, It is sad to say goodbye to a lovely friend who just visits us once a year – Ramadhan – for I am not certain if I could be able to see this friend again next year. It somehow makes my heart a little anxious yet grateful and overwhelmed for I know I am so blessed to have hugged this friend again, this year.

It’s my fourth year celebrating Ramadhan and my last Eid in Kuwait now. And as Ramadhan leaves, I am also saying goodbye to this beautiful place I’m already inloved with.

This Eid 2020 (my last Eid in Kuwait), might be my last glance of Kuwait’s gorgeous towers, beautiful sunsets, amazing humans, tasteful kubos, delicious laban. This might be my last eid prayer, my last to hear takbeer, my last salams to my dearest friends, my last sujood – in this land so beautiful. And this writing might be the last and final sweet memory I would keep for the rest of my life.

To a new beginning

I am ought to depart this land as I am only a stranger here. Though I’m leaving, Kuwait will forever be in my heart – something that I can brag about to my kids when I have one so soon. My four years seeking fortune in this place have been a part of my beautiful memories as an expat.

Though it was a rough ride, it taught me countless lessons that mold me who I am today. I could say I become a better person, a better friend, a better employee, a better expat, a better citizen, a better brother, a better son, a better husband, a better Muslim, a better me.

It’s in my fours here in Kuwait that I realized how beautiful life is if you always see the good things in every bad that happens. It is here I see myself how far I have come in the pursuit of a better purpose. It’s within these four years I realized I am worth something. It’s within these four years that I had all the “bests” of my life.

My four great years

Within those four years, I’ve got the major gifts of my entire life. I fulfilled most of my weird bucket list. I was able to visit Makkah and Madinah. I’ve built beautiful relationships. I’ve learned more about my religion. I become a husband. I become my own boss.

Being an expat is not easy. I may have experienced the “worsts” while working in Kuwait but it doesn’t mean I have regretted coming here.

The truth is, wherever we go and whatever job we may have, there are always goods and bads. It’s entirely up to us how we keep the boat sailing.

I feel bad to my fellow OFWs who have or had the worst experiences of their lives while working here. Those who have the evilest of employers and the worst workmates. It’s sad to see them suffering. It breaks my heart.

As I bid farewell to my fellow OFWs, I wish and I always pray that that we will all be well. Remember that God is always watching us and all those who do us wrong will surely have to pay the consequences one day.

I know we all have a dream. That’s why we are here because we want to achieve something.

Don’t quit.

To be honest, I’m coming back home having zero in my pocket. What I have is a dream. A dream that I’ve been working on my entire life and I am certain that now is the time to roll up the curtain.

If you’re an OFW, like me, don’t be afraid to go home just because you have saved nothing in your pocket. If you feel like you’re not worth it anymore working here, maybe it’s time for you to move forward. Don’t get stuck. Don’t quarantine yourself on something you are not happy about.

Invest on something you are passionate about. Forget your stressful job. Start your own and one day you’ll say, “I was once an OFW and I will never be going back again.”

Upwork is one of the world’s best leading freelancing platforms. It’s free and easy to join. Thousands of jobs are posted on Upwork from almost all types of industries around the globe.

How to create an effective Upwork profile:

  • #1. Complete your profile
    with all the necessary information about you and your professional background. Include a professional looking profile photo, preferably a clear colored frontal headshot. Please don’t use selfie. Employees don’t hire people with no personalities attached on their profiles. Like hey, who wants to talk with ta ghost?
  • #2. Showcase you special skill.
    Upwork has a feature where you can create a special page on your profile that showcases your best skillset. Example: Graphic Design. In this page you can write compelling paragraphs that highlight what sets you apart from other job seekers about Graphic Design jobs. You can also specify an amount you charge per job done.
  • #3. Verify your Upwork profile.
    Earn that magic “blue tick” next to your name. When your a verified Upwork freelancer, companies will not hesitate to contact you and ask for proposals. Sometimes a verified profile saves you a lot of ‘connects.’ Connects are virtual tokens on Upwork used by freelancers to submit proposals. To verify your profile just follow the instructions under settings. Upwork will asks you personal documents that prove your identity. Then a one-on-one video call from one of Upwork’s representative.
  • #4. Upload a compelling portfolio.
    But, I tell you, if you’re worried because you are just starting out and you don’t have a portfolio yet, don’t be sad. You are not required to create one. Just be honest on your profile. Tell the world why you don’t have a portfolio.

Jumpstart you career by getting certified at Google. If you’re someone looking to expand or learn more about earning a sweet spot in digital world, Google offers free training and workshop for those people who are interested not just about digital marketing but a wide range of digital courses – the Learn with Google program by Google.

To join is easy and courses are offered in modules. So you have the freewill to choose your convenient time. Good thing is, after completion you’ll get a certificate from a monster tech company – Google.

3. Start an E-commerce store on Shopify

You might have heard about dropshipping, right? Coronavirus does not infect dropshippers. (Kidding). And maybe, you think it’s hard and it needs a lot of money to start with. If you think that way, you are wrong. You don’t need to have a lot of money to start a dropshipping business online. All you need is just an internet and heart for your business. Money is important, but you don’t need a lot. 100 – 150$ is enough.

Easy steps to start a dropshipping business on Shopify:

  • #1. Find winning products
    It’s important to choose products that are highly salable online. Products that people are mostly interested with. Products that people can’t easily find in local stores, especially now that most of the stores are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. To do that, I recommend checking Amazon’s best seller page. This way, you’ll be able to understand what products people are usually buying online.

    Other platforms to check what products are highly sold online are: Alibaba, AliExpress, Wish, and Ecomhunt. Choose at least five or more products. After choosing products, check if that product you chose is trending online. Check it by typing keywords related to that product on Google Trends. This way, you’ll know which products people are searching online. Choose products are reserve this for later.
  • #2. Choose a unique name for your store
    Choosing a name for your store is crucial as it affects your marketing in the future. Store names that are name appropriately can make a long way for your e-commerce success. Choose a name for your store that relates to the product you are selling. It should be unique and easy to remember.

    Example, if you are selling kitchen gadgets, create a name that when people read it, they’ll know what you are selling even if they don’t see your products – say, KitchenKits or simply Kitchen Gadgets. Remember that your store name will also be the your website address if you choose to have an own domain. Let’s say kitchenkits.com.
  • #3. Create a Shopify account
    Creating a Shopify account is basic as elementary. Just go to Shopify website and create your account. From there, get familiarize how to configure your store and start creating. There hundreds of helpful videos on Youtube for you to go with.
  • #4. Import your products from AliExpress
    Now, take the product list that you’ve done in step 1. Go to Apps on Shopify and install Oberlo. From Oberlo, go to AliExpress and search your products. This part is tricky as you have to choose products from good suppliers. Tip: Select products that have high numbers of order. You can see it under product description on AliExpress.

    After choosing your products, start importing it to your Shopify store. On Shopify store, configure your design. Don’t worry Shopify is very easy to design. You don’t need an experience in web design and development here as long as you know how to read.
  • #5. Launch your store and start selling!
    After you finished choosing and importing your products to your Shopify store, it’s now time to buy your domain name. This time, you need money for the domain and hosting for using the Shopify platform. Domain registration on Shopify is only 16$. For hosting they offer a minimum fee of 29$ per month. As of now, due to Covid19 pandemic, you can use Shopify platform FREE for 3 months.

However, these standard hosting plans are just basic. Many web hosting providers offer free domain along with your purchased plan. This is all you need for now.

Step 1: Get ready with your domain name.

A domain name is usually the name of your business. It’s the name you’ll register (let’s talk about it later) to have a website address. For example, your business name is “Sylvia Clothing.” When you register this as a domain it will become “sylviaclothing.com” Domain is very important in getting a website for your business.

Step 2: Choose a web hosting plan.

What is a web hosting plan? Web hosting is a service that allows businesses, like yours, to create websites or web pages onto the internet. After you’ve purchased a web hosting plan, your website will be stored or hosted in high-end special computers called the server. Once hosted, your customers or the public can now view your website on the internet using your domain name.

Step 3: Buy the hosting and register your domain.

Doing this, you need to choose which provider is best for you. My personal recommendation is to go with this top 3 hosting providers, Godaddy, Bluehost, Hostgator. (Not affiliate links). Each of these providers have different hosting packages. It’s all up to you to choose which one is best for you.

To register the domain and hosting plan, just follow the instructions stipulated with your chosen provider.

Step 4: Setup your website. And boom. You’re done!

This is the tricky part. But don’t worry, most hosting providers like Godaddy, has built-in website builder on all their packages. The builders are usually drag-and-drop that a sixth-grader can easily follow. All you have to do is just prepare first all the contents that you want to put on your website.

Checklist: What are the contents you need to prepare when setting up your website?

  1. Your company logo. Prepare all necessary formats and sizes (JPEG, PNG recommended).
  2. Your company profile. This is for the about age.
  3. Photos and descriptions of products if you plan to set up a store.
  4. Necessary contact details and address, including social media and others.
  5. Others: Testimonials, FAQs, Employees’ Bio, Policies, etc. (Optional).

Small-time businesses and start-up entrepreneurs who have less knowledge about branding think it’s expensive and that they only settle to what they can do at the moment to upscale the business. For several years of experience working in corporate design and advertising, I’ve helped a lot of clients running small-time startup businesses. While for some it’s true that branding is expensive, I will tell you why it’s wrong.

Reason #1:
Branding is not what you know it is

One of the few reasons why small-time entrepreneurs don’t give a shot to get branding for their business is because they don’t have enough knowledge of what is it all about and how it works. This is why it’s important to know and understand it’s basic fundamentals and how it impacts your business.

Now let’s define what is branding in its simplest form. Branding is a marketing practice that gives your business a unique identity. It’s the physical face and body of your business. To understand more, it’s the name, color, symbol, and all the elements that represent your business.

That’s the very basic definition of branding. There is much more to it but I will be explaining it in the other post. For now, let’s focus on the basic understanding so it can help you shape your business and eventually identify the best decision whether to hire someone do the branding for you or do it yourself.

Who is Aeon Ph?

AeonPh takes pride in providing jobs to talented and skilled digital nomads over the years. Digital nomads who are passionate about offering excellent services to our clients, and in turn, provide support for themselves and for their families.

Since it’s inception in July 2016, Aeon PH has helped Filipino online freelancers land an online job. A feat that we are proud of since the primary company goal is to be a community of support to those who aspire to have the luxuries of working from home, like working while still finishing their studies or still being able to take care of the kids.

Aeon Ph’s primary goal is to provide remote assistance through offering a wide range of services and business solutions to clients matching their needs with the appropriate virtual assistants.

We call ourselves a family. And Aeon stands by its name which technically means, “indefinite and very long period of time.” From this point of focus, the company aims to provide long term support to clients and long term projects for its freelancers.

Acabo Creatives Co and Aeon Philippines share the same vision but offer different expertise. ACC focuses on the design and development of digital products. Aeons are hardcore marketers. Two forces fused in one serving a common purpose -to offer quality products and services and provide opportunities.

Back in 2017, Maebel and I talked about merging our visions to create an impact. And today, we’re in it.

I personally hope and pray that the Almighty may bless and guide the good desires of our hearts. And may this partnership be an instrument to the goods of our intentions. I am beyond grateful to all the beautiful people who trusted us and helped us to achieve all that we have now.
